Thursday 22nd July 2010

Nicholas had his two year assessment this afternoon and it would seem that he is spot on target for all his milestones, even his speech, which although a little slow, is still well within the normal range for his age.

I was once again stunned and pleasantly surprised by the services offered by the NHS and related charities. Nicholas underwent a 1 hour assessment (free of charge) with one of the health visitors during which time she checked his verbal, cognitive, gross motor, fine motor and social development. If any of these areas had been of concern she would have then been able to refer him to one of the related therapists for further investigation.

Once she had finished and updated Nick's red book (a record of his life) she then proceeded to hand him a bag filled with books and crayons which is supplied (again totally free of charge) by Bookstart which is a charity devoted to improving literacy. Bookstart is obviously focused at the most disadvantaged of children, but don't discriminate and EVERY child is given a set of books on their 1st and 2nd year assessment - oh how I wish the clinics in South Africa could offer the same service.

Today is also breakup day for Megan, I simply can't believe that she has just finished her first year of secondary school - time is simply flying by and all I can do is hold on and try to enjoy the ride :0)

So its holiday time in your household, am sure lots more photo moments are going to happen.

That's an amazing books service, SA could take that and use it..why not!

Do they include an assessment for charm and cuteness, coz the boy sure would have scored 200%!

I get really sad for the Mums in SA when I read things like this, we are sooo lucky here. I called the Drs room yesterday cos E had a lump and was worried, she saw the Dr within an hour! all free - brilliant. Hope to see you soon x
